First, confirm what suits the roof
Roof shape and slope influence which systems can be proposed. A low-slope addition may need a different treatment from the main roof, and a metal profile must meet its own installation requirements. Begin with suitable options rather than selecting a product from appearance alone and trying to fit it to every roof section.
Choose the appearance you will live with
Architectural shingles offer a layered texture; standing-seam metal creates longer, more defined lines. Look at examples on homes with similar siding and roof shapes. Include trim, gutters and prominent flashings in the discussion. Project photos are helpful inspiration, but confirm the actual colour and available finish before placing the order.
Compare the entire installed scope
Ask for proposals based on the same existing roof and the same assumptions about removal, decking and disposal. Metal roof details can add work at valleys, openings and changes of direction. Shingle proposals also need defined accessories and flashings. A material-only price leaves out much of what determines the final project cost.
Separate warranty wording from expected life
CertainTeed Landmark has manufacturer limited-warranty terms. Cascadia Metals material also has product-specific terms for relevant materials or finishes. Neither headline tells you everything about a completed roof. Read installation workmanship coverage separately, and ask how product eligibility and property conditions affect the proposal. A warranty duration should not become a promised lifespan.
Discuss care and future changes
Ask how the proposed roof should be inspected and cared for, and who to contact before another trade works on it. Mention future solar panels, additions, skylights or equipment changes. If you expect to sell, you may weigh the initial budget differently from someone planning a long stay. Either way, base the decision on an actual scope and your priorities.
Ask for a recommendation you can understand
Tell the roofer which three things matter most: initial spending, appearance, the installation schedule, future plans or another concern. Ask why the proposed system fits those priorities and what tradeoffs come with it. A useful recommendation should explain your property and choices in plain language without promising that one material solves every roofing concern.
